June 11, 2009, Elysian, Minn. — Plans to create a manure pit as part of a feedlot expansion could cause a stink between an area farmer and a group concerned with the water in a local lake.

Part of a project to add cattle to land owned by Wayne James has led to a proposed feedlot expansion that will increase the lot area from 225 to 500 animal units.

The Lake Elysian Watershed Association is concerned about the close proximity of the pit to the northern shore of Lake Elysian, which is on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources list of impaired waters.
