January 7, 2011, Lower
Swatara Township, PA — The number of chickens in Noah Kreider & Sons egg-laying
operation could increase 180 percent, according to plans to replace six
25-year-old chicken houses with five more modern buildings.
The farm now has 750,000
hens in six houses, which will be replaced by five updated houses holding 2.1
million birds, said Tom Beachler, Kreider operations manager. The footprint of
the houses will remain about the same, Beachler said. The egg production will
increase to about 144,000 dozen eggs per day, compared with the current 45,000
dozen.
