VA dairy makes changes following manure spill

June 10, 2013, Berryville, VA — After a mechanical problem caused a manure spill earlier this year, a Virginia dairy instituted a number of changes in its operation — including a berm around a manure pit, more personnel training and reduction of the dairy herd.
Robert Peer, agricultural program coordinator for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in Harrisonburg — which issues permits to the dairy — said his office and the facility’s operators have a letter of agreement on what steps will be taken to make sure the spill does not happen again.
