Webcast to discuss market-based conservation
The Livestock and
Poultry Environmental (LPE) Learning Center’s May webcast, scheduled
for May 16, will feature discussion of market-based conservation
programs.

May 12, 2008 – The Livestock and Poultry Environmental (LPE) Learning Center’s May webcast, scheduled for May 16, will feature discussion of market-based conservation programs.

Market-based conservation is based on the premise that conservation practices implemented by farmers may have value to others in society and therefore farmers may be able to generate income by implementing these practices.

The May 2008 webcast speakers will provide an overview of market based conservation and discuss some activities occurring around the U.S.  One is a program that generates carbon credit revenue by installing methane capture covers on manure lagoons and storage facilities. Speakers will also discuss the New York City Watershed program where farmers in upstate New York were paid to implement BMPs to protect the New York City water supply.  The program will end with a discussion of what is needed to promote market-based conservation in the U.S.

Dale Dewing, leader of the nutrient management team for the Watershed Agricultural Program for Cornell Cooperative Extension, Delaware County, New York

Jim Jensen, vice president of business development for Environmental Credit Corporation
