UNL Extension workshop highlighting manure fertilizer research

Extension workshops will address nutrient management for crop
production in times of high fertilizer prices at 15 locations across
the state in January and February.

January 7, 2009, Lincoln, Neb. — University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension workshops will address nutrient management for crop production in times of high fertilizer prices at 15 locations across the state in January and February.

Fertilizer costs were high in 2008 and there is uncertainty about 2009 prices, said Charles Wortmann, UNL nutrient management specialist. The Improving the Profitability of Fertilizer and Manure Use: New Research Findings and Tools workshops are targeted for crop producers and agronomists, especially where animal feeding operations are important.

Four main topics will be addressed. These include:

• Nutrient management for corn including a review of the recommendations, managing with high cost phosphorus, controlled release nitrogen, non-traditional soil management products, interpretation of soil test results and an introduction to the new UNL soil test software.
• Manure as a source of nutrients including estimating manure nutrient availability, interpretation of manure test lab reports and estimating the dollar value of manure.
• Value of crop residue harvest.
• Overview of recent ethanol-manure phosphorus research results. Soil fertility management questions of soybeans also will be addressed.

UNL Extension soil fertility specialists Charles Shapiro and Wortmann will work with local UNL Extension educators to conduct the workshops.

The events are co-sponsored by the Nebraska Corn Board and the USDA Cooperative Research, Extension and Education Service.

There is no fee to attend. Dates and locations are:
