Tempers flare at IA manure management meeting

October 17, 2012, Urbandale, IA — State Environment Protection Commission members were bombarded with jeers, catcalls and insults from angry environmentalists after the seven-member panel let stand a rule allowing limited application of liquid manure on Iowa farmland.
Nearly 30 members of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement shouted at the panel. The citizens group had appealed for the commission to prevent large-scale commercial livestock operations from applying liquid swine manure on land where the current crop has been harvested and would be planted to soybeans the next season.
