The Ohio Composting and Manure Management (OCAMM) program is sponsoring a seminar August 7 involving discussion of foodborne pathogens in manure.

manurepileThe presentation, entitled the Fate of Foodborne Pathogens in Manure and its Implications for Food Safety, will focus on research done by Dr. Eleco Franz of the Dutch Institute of Food Safety (RIKILT) . Dr. Franz’s work evaluates the survival of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 in manure-amended soils. The goal of his research is to identify soil characteristics that affect the persistence of the bacteria and develop models to predict survival time, thus reducing the risk of foodborne disease associated with the consumption of fresh vegetables.

The presentation begins at 10 a.m. and is free and open to the public with video-linked participation at Kottman Hall, Room 244, Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, and the Fisher building, Room 121, at Ohio State University in Wooster, OH.
