“There are many pork producing families in South Dakota implementing conservation programs everyday as a way to preserve the land on and around their farms,” said Jessica Dornink, program and communications director for the SDPPC. “This award is intended to recognize one who stands out among the rest for her/his environmental awareness, management practices and community relations.”

A panel of swine researchers and pork farmers will review the applications. The operations of the pork farmers will be evaluated on their manure management systems; water and soil conservation practices; odor-control strategies; farm aesthetics and neighbor relations; wildlife habitat promotion; innovative ideas used to protect the environment and an essay on the meaning of environmental stewardship.

Applications are available through the SDPPC office, 605-332-1600 and by clicking here. Applications are due at the office by December 3, 2008, and the recipient will be notified before December 22. The recipient will receive a cash prize and plaque and be nominated for the National Pork Environmental Steward Award given by the National Pork Board.
