Sask student tackles manure management plan

January 19, 2015, Saskatoon, Sask – Biological engineering student Alanna Howell literally deals with crap every day.
The University of Saskatchewan undergraduate student is studying the manure produced by more than 80 cows at the institution’s dairy research and teaching facility. She’s trying to develop a new manure management plan for the university so it can reduce its environmental footprint.
Currently, manure produced at the facility is scraped into a pit, stirred, pumped into a tank with water and then hauled away to be spread on fields. This process uses a lot of water and costs the university about $65,000 a year, Howell said. READ MORE
