Wisconsin Supreme Court holds manure is pollutant

On December 30, 2014, the Wisconsin Supreme Court reversed a court of appeals decision in Wilson Mutual Insurance Co. v. Falk, 2014 WI 136 (Wis. 2014), holding that manure that contaminates a well is a “pollutant,” and is therefore not covered under a farm’s general liability insurance policy. >> Read full article

Availability of phosphorus in manure applications to soil

The total phosphorus content in manure varies depending on the animal species, age, diet, and how the manure has been stored. Concentration of phosphorus in some manures may be up to 80 to 90 lbs P2O5 per ton (some poultry manures, for example), whereas other manure may contain as little as 4 lbs P2O5 per ton. >> Read full article

Nutrients with staying power

The fields may be frozen at this time of year, but researchers remain hard at work studying how to minimize nutrient losses off fields in the non-growing season. They’re looking at how manure application methods and tile drainage management systems influence the likelihood of nutrient loss in different soil types and different weather conditions – all through the convenience of a new computer modeling system.

The system’s development is part of a project led by Dr. Steven Frey, senior scientist, Aquanty Inc. Funded by the Water Adaptation Management and Quality Initiative (WAMQI), Frey used field experiment data from three sites in Ontario –Winchester, Delhi and Sebringville – to benchmark model simulations. >> Learn More…
