Pressure on G8 biofuel mandates

May 8, 2013  by  David Manly

May 8, 2013 – Leaders of the G8 nations are under increasing pressure to recosnider biofuel targets  due to concern over competition with food output.

According to Euractiv, around 200 British and international groups are lobbying against biofuel production because of the large amount of land that must be committed to its production in poorer countries. However, advocates of biofuels say that plant-based fuels introduce new markets and help to reduce overall carbon emissions.

The eight countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United States and Britain) will meet for the 39th G8 Summit from June 17-18, 2013 in Northern Ireland.
