May 27, 2008, St. Joseph, MI – The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has completed a new standard on diversions.
A diversion is defined as a channel constructed across a slope with a supporting ridge on the downhill side.
ASABE EP492, Planning, Design and Construction of Diversions was developed to be used as a guide for engineers and technicians in the planning, design, layout, construction, and maintenance of diversions. This standard applies where surface flow or shallow subsurface flow is a problem and can be intercepted by a shallow channel where soil and site conditions are suitable to build earth channels and earth ridges, where sediment accumulations are manageable, and where topography is suitable to provide adequate outlets.
A copy of the document can be ordered by contacting ASABE headquarters directly at martin@asabe.org.
A free electronic copy of the standard can also be obtained by ASABE members and those with site-license privileges to the ASABE Technical Library.
A current listing of all ASABE standards projects can be found here.
