March 20, 2009, Des Moines, IA – Farmers who stockpile dry manure from confinement operations would face new regulations under a bill approved recently by the Iowa House and Senate .
Under the proposed regulation, an operator couldn’t stockpile manure within 1,250 feet of a business, church, school or other public facility. The same distance restriction would also apply to homes not owned by the producer.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has guidance documents that producers must follow, but there are not specific rules. The bill – House File 735 – would apply to owners of feeding operations built before Jan. 1, 2006.
The bill passed in an 87 to eight vote in the House and also received Senate approval.
