June 1, 2011 – Eurofins, a
food and feed testing laboratory group, has developed a method to predict the
nutrient content of manures, slurries and biosolids. It’s hoped the technology
can help farmers and growers to more accurately assess the amount of the
material that needs to, or can, be applied to crops, and so reduce costs.

Using Near Infra Red
Spectroscopy (NIRS) technology, the new test analyzes dry matter, total
nitrogen, ammonium-nitrogen, phosphate, potash, magnesium and sulfur. The
technology is also being used to predict the N release from manures by
mineralization.
