MLMMI looking for proposals
The Manitoba Livestock Manure Management
Initiative (MLMMI) is inviting individuals, partnerships, companies,
and research organizations to submit proposals for innovative manure
management.

May 22, 2009, Winnipeg, Man. – The Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative (MLMMI) is inviting individuals, partnerships, companies, and research organizations to submit proposals for innovative manure management.

It is the mission of the MLMMI to foster sustainable development of the livestock industry in Manitoba in an environmentally sound and community friendly manner. The group works with Manitoba’s agricultural industry to address the challenges of adaptation to environmental regulations and will support initiatives that develop new technologies for environmentally sound management of nutrients, odors, and emissions resulting from animal agriculture.

The research and demonstration projects must be in the following priority areas:

  • Decreasing phosphorus loading in soils to comply with current regulations;
  • The fate of nutrients and/or heavy metals from various manures when applied to annual versus perennial cropping systems (i.e. effects of cropping system on their use and release);
  • Odor and gases: development of standards for acceptable odor levels surrounding livestock operations, reduction of odor and gases from livestock operations (both indoors and outdoors), and evaluation of livestock citing models

Proposals submitted in other subject areas will be considered as well, but funding priority will be given to proposals falling within the above subject areas.  The board will select those proposals that are most relevant and promising for implementation in
Manitoba. It is important that all project proponents be willing to assist the MLMMI in communicating project findings to industry stakeholders and the public.

The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2009.

Interested parties are encouraged to contact Brandy Street (Executive Director) by phone at (204) 945-2122 or by email at brandy.street@gov.mb.ca for assistance in setting up their project proposal. Application forms and information on how to submit a proposal are available on the Manure Initiative website at www.manure.mb.ca/projects. Project proponents will be notified of their project’s approval or decline by mail.
