February 24, 2010 – The Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative approved 2 new projects in the fall of 2009 which will soon be underway. Each project tests a specific manure processing technology in order to evaluate its efficiency in managing manure nutrients; in particular, phosphorus. • PAMI to investigate efficiency of in-vessel composting for handling manure lagoon solid fractions
  • Hytek tests a potential solution to the problem of nutrient concentration around intensive livestock operations

These two projects are expected to be a good fit with the strategic plan that resulted from the recent phosphorus workshop titled “Achieving Manure Phosphorus Balance in Manitoba” held in late fall of 2009. The goal of the workshop was “to better equip Manitoba's livestock producers to comply with phosphorus-based manure management regulations while remaining economically competitive by sharing current information on available management options and working to identify, evaluate and adopt management options for achieving manure phosphorus balance in Manitoba.”
