September 27, 2010,
Baltimore, MD – An environmental group is calling for Maryland Department of Agriculture
Secretary Earl F. “Buddy” Hance to resign in the latest development of a
three-year dispute over papers documenting the state’s enforcement of pollution
management laws.
The Waterkeeper Alliance
accused Hance’s department and the Maryland Farm Bureau industry group of
colluding to obstruct the release of MDA records on nutrient management plans,
which a Maryland court ruled are public documents that MDA is required to
redact and produce. Under the law, agencies have 30 days to respond to a
request. However, the agriculture department maintained that the delay was the
result of difficulty communicating with the group and a pending court case.
