Manure released to dry creek in Iowa

October 9, 2013  by Press release

October 7, 2013, Melvin, IA — A manure spill from a dairy near Melvin in Osceola County flowed into a dry creek, an unnamed tributary to the Floyd River. The spill was dammed three-quarters of a mile south of the spill site.

The spill occurred due to failures of a pump and turn-off switch. At the beginning of the spill, which occurred Sept. 30, it was estimated that 200,000 gallons of manure was released. That has since been changed to one million gallons of manure.

The manure is being pumped from the creek and injected into a field.

The Iowa DNR is continuing to monitor the situation and take appropriate enforcement action.
