Manure application and PED survey

June 26, 2014, Winnipeg, Man – The Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative (MLMMI), in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin, has recently initiated a survey of swine manure applicators.

The appearance of the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PED) in North America presents significant challenges for manure applicators. Since the virus is primarily spread by fecal-oral contact and can survive in manure for extended periods of time, it is possible for the disease to be spread by any object that becomes contaminated with infected pig manure.

A survey of manure applicators has been undertaken in conjunction with the upcoming North American Manure Expo to:

• Ascertain how manure application practices, equipment, staff training and communication have changed as a result of the PED virus
• Determine the largest PED related challenges that manure applicators are currently facing
• Learn what approaches or solutions that manure applicators have used in dealing with the PED virus, what has worked particularly well (best management practices)

The results of the survey are being discussed during the North American Manure Expo, being held July 8 & 9 in Springfield, Missouri. They will also be part of a webinar by the Livestock Poultry & Environmental Learning Center (LPELC) being held Friday, July 18.  Further details are available on the LPELC website.
