Akwaseal from CETCO Lining Technologies is made with two water barriers: bentonite clay and a flexible plastic membrane. The bentonite clay is sandwiched between two textiles which are needle punched together. The membrane is permanently laminated to the outer textile surface. The result is said to be an easy-to-install, self-healing liner requiring little maintenance and offering long-term durability. The swelling properties of the bentonite clay and cushioning of the textiles eliminate the need for seam welding and underlayments.

Akwaseal is an ideal liner system for agricultural waste lagoons, says the company. The liner meets government regulations and eliminates potential liner flotation due to gas build-up. This liner system is suitable for many types of liquid containment projects and is a low permeability product that won’t shrink, crack, float, or balloon.

Layfield Plastics Incorporated

layfield

Layfield/CW Neal is an industry leader in the design, fabrication and installation of floating cover systems and lagoon liners used in the agricultural industry.

Geosynthetic floating covers are increasingly being specified and used in the agricultural industry to address growing environmental issues typically associated with intensive livestock operations. As rural regions become more populated, the environmental issues surrounding livestock odor, emissions and the mounting concerns with groundwater contamination have become much more prevalent in the public view.

Geosynthetic floating covers and geomembranes (lagoon liners) are increasingly being used in anaerobic lagoons by livestock producers to control gas emissions, reduce odor and protect groundwater. In an anaerobic lagoon, floating covers are used to create an impervious physical barrier between the liquid manure and the air. This impervious barrier is designed to restrict the biogases from leaving the liquid manure. The covers help to control and vent the chemical compounds in the organic gas including hydrogen sulfide and ammonia that can cause offensive odors.

Huesker

huesker

The Zeomat floating, permeable, odor-adsorbing cover system from Huesker is designed to act as a multi-level bioreactor (digester). This system allows for both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria dispersion within the foam portion and gas adsorption/ion exchange within the composite geotextile/zeolite portion, thus eliminating the malodors associated with agricultural and industrial waste lagoons.

The bottom layer of the system contains a closed cell, highly permeable, polypropylene (or polyethylene) foam that has a density of 2.1 lbs/ft3 and a minimum thickness of 3/4” (20mm). This foam, due to being closed cell, resists water absorption and maintains its buoyancy. The lower portion of the foam is submerged within the liquid waste and forms a zone that promotes anaerobic bacteria activity while the upper portion of the foam is within the atmosphere and forms a zone that promotes aerobic bacteria activity.

The top layer of the system incorporates a special composite, non-woven polyester geotextile that is designed to contain a thin layer of zeolite (odor adsorbing mineral). This top layer is mechanically bonded to the foam layer
so that the system maintains its pervious structure and durability.

The composite non-woven geotextile is designed to contain the zeolite granules on this layer and resist being blown away by wind. Polyester fibers are used to produce the non-woven because of their high resistance to UV degradation and chemical attack.

The zeolite mineral acts as a molecular sieve and adsorbs the ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gases that escape the bacteria zone.
Because zeolite has a very high cation exchange capacity, the trapped gases are transformed into non-odor chemicals such as nitrogen and water.
