News Applications Beef Environment Protection Protection
Iowa decision will allow manure spreading near trout streams

April 7, 2021  by  Bree Rody

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recently approved plans for a feedlot from livestock company Supreme Beef. The plan will see feeding operations as well as manure spreading allowed near some of Iowa’s trout streams.

The operation involves the raising of more than 11,000 beef cattle. The operation will be established in Girard Township in Clayton County.

The Iowa Environmental Council, a nonprofit group, said in a statement that it will consider “next steps” following the approval, and expressed displeasure at the decision. The group’s primary concern, according to the statement, is the over-application of manure and a possible threat to water health.

The DNR has spent the spring gathering public comments on the matter from stakeholders.
