February 24, 2010, Manitowac – The Department of Natural Resources says a break in a manure pit leaked an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 gallons of liquid manure Saturday morning.

Officials say it happened at a farm on Benzinger Road, just east of Mishicot in Manitowoc County.

According to DNR Conservation Warden Robert Stroess, the manure seeped into a drainage ditch that leads to the East Twin River.

Officials say they were able to keep the manure from contaminating streams and the ground water.

The DNR says clean-up is underway to keep the manure from reaching the river. They hope to be finished by Sunday morning.

Authorities are unsure what caused the manure pit break.
