Fish kill investigated in Mitchell County, Iowa
November 3, 2014 by Press release
November 3, 2014, Stacyville, IA – A fish kill in the Little Cedar River north of Stacyville is being investigated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
A coupling on a hose being used to land apply manure from a hog confinement broke late Friday evening releasing approximately 5,000 gallons of manure into the Little Cedar River. The spill was reported to the DNR at 11 p.m. Friday. Flow of the manure was slowed by a number of beaver dams and overnight, approximately 100,000 gallons was pumped and land applied to prevent the manure from flowing farther downstream.
Dead fish were found along approximately one-half of a mile of stream. Fisheries biologists from the DNR will be conducting an assessment of the fish kill.
