Feds announce program to protect Lake Erie

March 19, 2012, Traverse City, MI — A $2 million federal grant will help farmers in sections of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana reduce phosphorus runoff blamed for algae buildup in western Lake Erie, said U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
Participants in the voluntary program will get money to help buy equipment and change land use practices to keep excessive nutrients from washing into streams and eventually reaching the lake. READ MORE
