EPA informs Maryland poultry producers it’s cracking down

Maryland, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) informed
poultry producers they must obtain federal pollution discharge permits
if any of the manure from their flocks washes into drainage ditches
and/or streams.

March 16, 2009, Baltimore, Md – During recent industry meetings in Maryland, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) informed poultry producers they must obtain federal pollution discharge permits if any of the manure from their flocks washes into drainage ditches and/or streams.

broilersThe move comes after EPA officials reinterpreted a regulation, declaring that if rainfall drains away from chicken houses into ditches or streams, it is most likely carrying manure and needs to be controlled.
