July 14, 2009, Altura, MN – Diamond K Dairy has been ordered to pay the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) $15,000 in fines following manure spills and odor violations.
The dairy, outside of Altura, is one of the county’s largest. It’s faced criticism in the past from neighbors complaining about odors and spill notification, and battled Winona County regulators in 2006 for a herd expansion that would have allowed installation of a manure digester — expected to have helped with the odor.
