BC dairy pinpointed as source of nitrate pollution

June 6, 2016, Okanagan Valley, BC – After months claiming sources of nitrate pollution in an aquifer from which several hundred residents in the Okanagan Valley draw their drinking water were too difficult to pinpoint, Mary Polak’s environment ministry acknowledges it’s a giant dairy operation that spread millions of litres of liquid manure above the water source with ministry approval.
On May 12, Christa Zacharias-Homer, deputy director of regional operations for the ministry, wrote to the biggest dairy in the region announcing that the province is imposing a pollution abatement order under the environmental management act. READ MORE
