As animal ag evolves, so will nutrient management

Pennsylvania is 37 percent short of meeting its goals for nitrogen reduction goal in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. However, the ways Pennsylvania agriculture has changed and will change could have a big influence on agriculture runoff.
The number of dairy operations, beef and hog farms have decreased over the years. As a percent of the total operations, dairy farms fell from almost 31 percent in 1997 to 19 percent in 2017.
The Penn State Extension dairy business management team has speculated that animal agriculture is moving to the extremes — the small-scale and large-scale operations — with the middle section losing operations.
