Iowa’s Environmental Protection Commission recently rejected permits for two hog operations that had previously been approved.
According to a report in the Des Moines Register, commissioners made the decision, stating the rules involving approval of large-scale livestock operation permits leave out environmental and neighbors’ concerns.
The permits for the two operations, each designed to hold 7,440 hogs, had previously been accepted for approval by Iowa’s Department of Natural Resources and had passed a complicated master matrix.
Only four permits have been turned down in as many years.
