Alta hog farm levied $50,000 in fines

November 27, 2015, Leduc, Alta – Shooters Hill Livestock, a former hog farm near Calmar, was handed $50,000 in fines in Leduc Provincial Court recently after its owner pleaded guilty to a charge of depositing a deleterious substance into a body of water under the Fisheries Act.
The owner appeared in court to enter the plea, and the sentence was handed out the same day. The charge stemmed from a May 10-11, 2014 spill of more than one million gallons of liquid from a lagoon containing manure on the farm’s property that contaminated Winding Creek and Conjuring Creek, causing a fish kill and eventually entering the North Saskatchewan River.
