MN farmers given a role in water quality

January 19, 2012 – A new federal program that encourages farmers to adopt better land-use practices that cut pollution into rivers and lakes is getting a trial run in Minnesota.

Under the pilot program, participating farmers would pledge to manage their lands in ways that reduce soil erosion and cut fertilizer, pesticide and manure runoff. In return, those farmers would be protected from new water-quality requirements for a projected 10 years and would get technical assistance and up to $10 million in financial help from the federal government.
